(NaBloPoMo: Routine) Pigments and routine
July 6, 2009 § Leave a comment
There was a time when I felt very inspired by tempera paintings and tried to mix my own tempera colors for each painting. It was fun, I tried an old receipt for egg tempera, pigments, egg (the complete egg, not just the yolk) and a tiny bit of linseed oil. It works beautifully, feels like some sort of fluid oil painting, but dries much faster. The disadvantages of this technique were that it is very time consuming as you cannot sit down start painting right away and finish after a couple of minutes. You do have to make preparations before starting to paint and there’s a lot to clean up afterwards. So it never really became a routine for me and I’m back to the easily available ready-made paints as for now.

“Pollen” egg-tempera on canvas, size : 30 cm x 30 cm
Another picture that I painted recently using self-prepared egg tempera. It’s a pity the colors don’t show quite correct in this photo, they are more beautiful in reality.
Daydreamer

This little illustration (h: 30 cm w: 24 cm) titled “daydreamer” was painted with gouache and selfmade tempera. It’s a funny and pleasing experience to mix your own paints with pigments. That’s the reason I’m working right now on a tempera tutorial and hope that I’ll be able to present it to you soon :).
